I’ve been thinking about this a lot since writing this piece.

TV is finally catching up to adult creators. That part is true. We’re seeing storylines where creators aren’t side characters anymore—they’re central to the plot, the income, the identity.

And on the surface, that feels like progress.

But here’s what I can’t shake:

We’ve seen this before.

Pretty Woman made Julia Roberts and Richard Gere household names. It took the story of a sex worker and turned it into something polished, romantic, and widely accepted by mainstream audiences. Hollywood made billions telling that story.

But for the majority of sex workers?
Nothing fundamentally changed. Many are still navigating stigma, instability, and lack of protection or support.

That gap between storytelling and reality feels very familiar right now.

Because for every new TV storyline or headline about creators breaking into mainstream media, there are thousands of creators quietly trying to make this work—juggling content schedules, algorithm shifts, burnout, and inconsistent income.

So the real question isn’t just: Is this progress?

It’s: Who actually benefits from it?

Because representation without infrastructure doesn’t create opportunity.
It creates illusion.
